Why Fluorosilicone Instead of Standard Silicone

Silicone and fluorosilicone look similar, feel similar and are often used side by side. They are not interchangeable.

Standard silicone excels at temperature resistance and flexibility, and it's cost-effective. What it does not do well is resist hydrocarbons. Expose it to fuel or oil over time and it absorbs them — swelling, softening and losing strength until it fails.

Fluorosilicone keeps the temperature capability of silicone while adding resistance to fuels, oils and solvents. That combination is what makes it the material of choice wherever a hose has to live in contact with petroleum-based fluids and heat at the same time.

The rule is simple: if the hose sees air or coolant, silicone is fine. If it sees fuel, oil or vapour, you want fluorosilicone.


The Construction

Look closely at the cut ends of these hoses and you can read the layup: a black outer cover, a bright red inner liner, and reinforcing layers sandwiched between them.

That structure is doing three jobs at once:

  • The inner liner is the fluid-contact surface — the layer that has to resist whatever is flowing through it
  • The reinforcement resists pressure. Under boost, an unreinforced hose wants to balloon; the layers hold the bore where it was designed to be
  • The outer cover protects the reinforcement from abrasion, heat and the environment

Smooth internal walls throughout, so flow stays consistent from one end to the other.

Where Fluorosilicone Earns Its Place

Anywhere a hose meets petroleum-based fluid and heat, fluorosilicone is the correct specification:

  • Fuel and vapour lines on performance and retrofit builds
  • Oil and breather circuits where oil mist attacks standard silicone
  • Turbo and intake plumbing exposed to oil vapour from the crankcase
  • Marine and powersports applications — jet ski, PWC and watercraft plumbing where fuel resistance and water resistance are both required
  • Any engine bay where the original hose failed because the fluid it touched destroyed it
